Summary: | Broadcast journalist and entrepreneur Sheila Dean Brooks was born on June 24, 1956, in Kansas City, Missouri. She received her B.A. degree in communications from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1978, her M.A. degree in political science from Howard University in 2003, and was a candidate to receive her Ph.D. degree in mass communication and media studies from Howard University in 2014. From 1978 until 1990, Brooks built a distinguished television career as a news director, reporter, anchor, and documentary producer for KCTS-TV, KREM-TV, KAMU-TV/FM, Vanita Productions, and WTTG-TV Channel 5. She founded SRB Communications in 1990, a full-service strategic communications agency and post-production facility, where she served as president and CEO. Brooks has received forty-seven national Telly Awards, a national Gracie Award from American Women in Radio and Television, three local Emmy Awards, and the inaugural Pat Tobin Entrepreneurial Award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
