| Summary: | Professor and social worker Bernice Hutcherson was born in Newton, Kansas on April 4, 1925. In 1950, Hutcherson received her B.A. degree from Langston University and her M.S.W. degree from the University of Kansas in 1969. Hutcherson began work in Chicago public schools as a reading teacher. In 1953, she became a social worker with Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Services where she served in various supervisory roles before becoming a professor of social work at Wichita State University in 1970. There, she served on numerous university committees, completing a three-year term as gerontology faculty chair before retiring in 1996. After retirement, Hutcherson was a lecturer and participated in academic forums. The recipient of numerous honors, Hutcherson belonged to professional organizations, including the National Association of Social Work. She volunteered with organizations committed to substance abuse research and program development. Hutcherson passed away on May 3, 2012 at age 87.
