Summary:Choreographer and tap dancer Maurice Robert Hines, Jr. was born on December 13, 1943 in New York City. Hines began studying tap dancing in New York City at age five at the Henry LeTang Dance Studio in 1948. In 1954, at age ten, he and his brother, the late Gregory Hines, appeared in the Broadway musical comedy, The Girl in Pink Tights. Following the example of the Nicholas Brothers, the Hines Brothers toured as the opening act for headliners like Lionel Hampton. Their father joined the act as a drummer. The threesome became known as Hines, Hines & Dad. In 1973, Hines began his solo career singing and dancing as Nathan Detroit in the hit musical National Touring Company of Guys and Dolls with Debbie Allen. After appearing in the film, The Cotton Club, he conceived, directed, choreographed, and starred in the musical Uptown...It's Hot! Hines received a Tony Award nomination for his performance.
