Summary:University president Dr. William R. Harvey was born on January 29, 1941 in Brewton, Alabama. He was a graduate of Southern Normal High School and Talladega College. He joined the U.S. Army in 1962 as well as the U.S. Army Reserves upon his return to the United States. He earned his Ph.D. degree in college administration from Harvard University in 1972. Before coming to Hampton in 1978, he held administrative posts at Harvard, Fisk, and Tuskegee universities. Beginning his tenure as President of Hampton University, student enrollment increased from approximately 2,700 to approximately 6,300. Harvey increased Hampton's endowment from $29 million to over $250 million. His achievements are recognized in publications such as "Personalities of the South," "Who's Who in Black America," "Who's Who in Education," and "Who's Who in America.".
