| Summary: | Academic administrator and museum executive Mary Schmidt Campbell was born to Elaine and Harvey Schmidt on October 21, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her B.A. degree from Swarthmore College and her M.F.A. degree and Ph.D. degree from Syracuse University. Throughout her career, Campbell distinguished herself as an educator and advocate of the arts. From 1977 to 1987, Campbell was the executive director of the Studio Museum in Harlem. She left the Studio Museum to become Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the City of New York, where she served until 1991. Campbell's leadership in the fields of the arts and public policy led to her appointment as Dean of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where, over two decades, she established and chaired the Department of Art and Public Policy. After a brief retirement, she was appointed the 10th president of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia in 2015.
