| Summary: | Architect John Saunders Chase was born on January 23, 1925, in Annapolis, Maryland. After graduating from Bates High School, he earned his B.S. degree at Hampton University in 1948. In 1952, he became the first African American graduate of the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture. He was also the first African American licensed to practice architecture in Texas when he founded John S. Chase, AIA Architects. He was a founder of the National Organization of Minority Architects in 1971. In 1980, Chase was appointed to the United States Commission on Fine Arts. His firm designed the George R. Brown Convention Center, Links, Inc. National Headquarters, Delta Sigma Theta National Headquarters, the Harris County Astrodome Renovation and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. He was commissioned to design the United States Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia. Chase passed away on March 29, 2012 at age 87.
