| Summary: | Electrical engineer Percy A. Pierre was born January 3, 1939 in Welcome, Louisiana. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame. At Johns Hopkins University in 1967, Pierre became the first African American in the U.S. to receive a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering. As the first African-American appointed assistant secretary of the U.S. Army for Research and Development, he held successful posts in government and higher education. He served as Dean of the School of Engineering at Howard University from 1971-1977. Pierre was President of Prairie View Agricultural and Mechanical University from 1983-1989. As Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at Michigan State University, he became professor of electrical and computer engineering. Pierre received the Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2008 for his work in creating programs to increase opportunities for minority graduate engineering students.
