Summary: | Journalist Renee Poussaint was born in New York City on August 12, 1944. She received her B.A. degree in English literature from Sarah Lawrence College in 1964, and graduated with her M.A. degree in African American studies and African literature from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1970. She began her career in television broadcasting as news correspondent at WBBM-TV in Chicago, Illinois. Poussaint also worked as a network correspondent and news anchor for CBS and ABC. Poussaint served as a senior fellow at the Academy of Leadership at University of Maryland, College Park, where she produced the award-winning documentary "Journey toward Freedom" with John Hope Franklin and Bishop Desmond Tutu. In 2001, with educator and producer Camille Cosby, Poussaint founded the National Visionary Leadership Project. They co-edited A Wealth of Wisdom: Extraordinary African American Elders Speak. She was the recipient of three national and seven local Emmy awards.
