| Summary: | Mayor and alderman Marvin Pratt was born on May 26, 1944 in Dallas, Texas. He moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1959 and attended North Division High School. After graduation, Pratt enlisted in the United States Air Force for three years, when he was honorably discharged. After leaving the Air Force, Pratt enrolled at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, receiving his undergraduate degree in 1972. Pratt began his political career as an intern for Mayor Henry Maier, and was elected to the Common Council as alderman in 1986. In 2000, Pratt served as the president of the Common Council until he was appointed as acting mayor in 2004, making him the first African American in the position of mayor in Milwaukee. In 2011, Pratt was elected as the interim Milwaukee County Executive for a three months. In 2016, Milwaukee Public Schools named one of their elementary schools in his honor.
