Summary: | Entrepreneur Johnny Mack Brown was born in rural Alabama, in 1943. Brown earned his B.A. degree from Chicago State College; and his M.A. degree from Governor's State College in University Park, Illinois. After graduating he worked as a teacher and at a Goodyear Tire store. He wanted to purchase the dealership but was unable to get an SBA loan. But with savings that he and his five brothers accumulated, Brown was able to purchase the Goodyear outlet. It was the fifth independent - and the first African American - Goodyear dealership in America. In 1970, he changed the name to Johnny Brown's Tire Company. And expanded his business from one single store into a corporation with multiple locations in Chicago, Illinois; Atlanta, Georgia; and Cleveland, Ohio. Beyond his accomplished career, Brown was honored with various awards for his community involvement, especially with youth. Johnny Brown passed away on September 5, 2009 at age 66.
