| Summary: | Dr. Bette Lorrina Catoe-Strudwick was born April 7, 1926, in Washington, D.C. She earned her B.S. degree in chemistry and physics from Howard University in 1948; and her M.D. degree from Howard University Medical School in 1951. She was one of seven women in her graduating class. In 1956, Catoe opened a pediatric practice in her home office. In 1958, she helped to integrate Washington, D.C. hospitals, and moved her home based medical practice into a downtown office. From 1971 until her retirement in 2003, Catoe continued to see thousands of children. She also served more than thirty years as an at-large member of the Board of Trustees of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia. She was also politically active, and served as a delegate to the 1976 National Democratic Convention in New York City. She was a member of the National Urban League and Jack and Jill of America.
