Reeves attended Detroit's public schools, before attending Harvard University, where he graduated in 1973 with his B.A. degree in American history and literature. In 1976, he graduated from University of Michigan Law School. Reeves entered into private law practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts until he was elected to the Cambridge City Council in 1990.
