Summary:Trumpet player Philip Cohran was born Philip Thomas Cohran May 8, 1927, in Oxford, Mississippi. Cohran graduated from Lincoln University Lab High School in 1945. Cohran played trumpet with a number of groups in the St. Louis area in the late 1940's. In 1950, Cohran joined the Jay McShann band. In 1952, Cohran moved to Chicago, where he played trumpet and thumb piano with Sun Ra's Astral Infinity Arkestra. In 1965, Cohran was a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) In 1966, Cohran formed the Artistic Heritage Ensemble, which included musicians who would later become members of Earth, Wind and Fire. He was also founding director of the Afro Arts Theatre in 1967. In 1968, Cohran left Afro Arts to teach at Malcolm X College. Cohran received the name "Kelan" from Chinese Muslims he met on tour. Cohran passed June 28, 2017 at age 90.
