Summary: | University president Joyce F. Brown was born July 7, 1947, in New York City. She earned her B. A. degree from Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York in 1968; her M. A. and Ph.D. degrees from New York University in 1971 and 1980, respectively. She was dean of urban affairs at Bernard Baruch College in New York City and professor clinical psychology at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. In 1993, New York City Mayor David Dinkins appointed Brown deputy mayor for public and community affairs. In 1998, she was the first African-American woman to be appointed president of the State University of New York's Fashion Institute of Technology. She served on numerous corporate boards of directors including the Paxar Corporation; and the Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation. She was the wife of H. Carl McCall, who served as Comptroller of the State of New York.
