| Summary: | Chemist and federal government administrator Tyrone D. Mitchell was born on May 6, 1939 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned his B.A. degree in chemistry from Dillard University and his M.S. degree in organic chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh in 1964. Mitchell then joined General Electric Company as a process chemist. He received his Ph.D. degree in polymer chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1978 and was promoted to senior chemist at General Electric Silicones. During Mitchell's twenty-five years with GE, he co-authored 16 technical publications and received more than twenty-five United States patents. He left GE in 1990 and joined Corning Incorporated where he held a series of management positions in the Science & Technology Division. In 2000, he retired from Corning to serve as a program officer in the Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry Program at the National Science Foundation (NSF) where he was promoted to program director in 2003.
