Summary: | Art collector and educator Shirley Kinsey was born on February 7, 1946 in Lake City, Florida. Kinsey graduated from Florida A&M University in 1967 with her B.A. degree in English. She received her M.A. degree in multi-cultural education from Pepperdine University. In 1967, Kinsey moved to California where she worked as an elementary school teacher and then as a manager for Xerox Corporation and KBK Enterprises, Inc. She and her husband are recognized for their collection of African American art, books and manuscripts. Their exhibit, entitled "The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey - Where Art and History Intersect," toured nationally from 2006. In 2009, Kinsey, with her husband, co-authored The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, a companion book to their exhibit which was adopted by the Florida Department of Education. Kinsey also co-founded the Bernard and Shirley Kinsey Foundation for the Arts and Education.
