Summary: | Actor Brian Stokes Mitchell was born on October 31, 1957 in Seattle, Washington. Mitchell's father taught radio code to the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II and was an electrical engineer for the U.S. Navy. Mitchell lived briefly in Guam and the Philippines as a child before settling in San Diego where he trained as a performer and made his professional debut at age sixteen. He made his television debut in 1979 in Roots: The Next Generations. He was also a series regular for Trapper John, M.D. Mitchell's Broadway debut came in 1988, and he received his first Tony nomination for playing Coalhouse Walker in Ragtime in 1998. He received Tony award nominations for leading roles in King Hedley II and Man of La Mancha, and won the Tony for playing Fred Graham in Kiss Me, Kate. Mitchell became chairman of the board for the Actors Fund of America in 2004.
