Summary:Pediatrician and minister Dr. Horace E. Smith was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 10, 1949. His mother died when he was 10, and with his grandmother's guidance, he became active in the church. Graduating with honors from Chicago State University, he entered the University of Illinois Medical Center. Completing residencies and fellowships in pediatric hematology and oncology, he became attending pediatrician at Rush Presbyterian Medical Center in 1980. Beginning in 1986, Smith served as the director of the Comprehensive Sickle Cell/Thalassemia Program at Children's Memorial Hospital, and was recognized worldwide as a leader in his field. In 1980, he was named pastor of the Apostolic Faith Church, his childhood church. As both a pediatrician and a minister, Smith served Chicagoans from all backgrounds, actively working to redevelop and reshape the neighborhood surrounding his church, while continuing to bring a human element to his medical practice.
