Summary: | Entrepreneur and aviator David A. Smith was born on August 29, 1915 in Clinton, Louisiana. Smith received his B.A. degree in 1938 from West Virginia State College and continued his studies at the University of Denver, where he received his M.A. degree in 1940. After serving in the United States Army as one of the Tuskegee Airmen in the Hubert L. "Hooks" Jones Chapter, Smith moved to Denver, Colorado, where he opened Dave Smith Realty to serve Denver and its suburbs. This company became one of the first African American real estate firms in the city. In 1962, he received a Certificate of Educational Achievement in Real Estate from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Smith then became the first African American to serve as the Colorado Real Estate Commissioner. He was a lifetime member of the NAACP and the Urban League.
