Summary:Medical doctor Dr. Charles H. Epps, Jr. was born on July 24, 1930, in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., graduating magna cum laude with his B.S. degree in chemistry, and received his M.D. degree from Howard University's School of Medicine. He began his career with an internship and residency in orthopedic surgery with Freedmen's Hospital in Washington, D.C. While on active duty in the U.S. Army Reserve, he became chief resident in orthopedic surgery at D.C. General Hospital, the first African American to earn this distinction. Returning to Howard after completing his military service in 1962, he opened up a private office to see patients. At the age of thirty-three, he was named chief of the division of orthopedic surgery at Howard University medical school. Epps held a variety of titles with the hospital until his retirement in 2001. He also served in numerous professional organizations.
