Summary: | Professor and activist Angela Davis was born on January 26, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama. She earned her B.S. degree from Brandeis University in 1965; her M.A. degree from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and her Ph.D. degree from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. She began her academic career teaching at UCSD in 1969. But Governor Ronald Reagan objected to her ties to the Communist Party and pressed for her dismissal. In 1970, Davis was arrested and charged with murder in connection with a prison break by members of the Black Panther Party. She was acquitted and returned to teaching in 1972. Davis ran for vice president twice on the Communist Party ticket. Davis has been a frequent lecturer on criminal justice and the prison industrial complex. She authored several books and worked as a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
