Summary: | Choral director and educator Robert E. "Gene" Wooten, Sr. was born on February 2, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He formed his first choral group, the Morgan Park Crusaders, while still in high school. After suffering a serious illness as a young man, Wooten pledged his life and musical talent to celebrating his spirituality and in July 1949 founded the Wooten Choral Ensemble, based at Beth Eden Baptist Church. The group traveled around the country and recorded several highly-praised albums of gospel music. In addition to his work as a gospel musician, Wooten enjoyed a distinguished career as an educator with the Chicago Board of Education until his retirement in 1994. Wooten received many awards for his contributions to gospel music, including an honorary doctorate from Virginia Seminary College. He lived with his wife on the South Side until he passed away on March 27, 2008.
