Summary:Business consultant and foundation executive William Gregory Wims was born on September 2, 1949 in Bethesda, Maryland. Between 1968 and 1970, Wims attended Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland and Howard University. In 1969, he was named the vice president of the Maryland Youth Commission. While working for the 4-H Club of Montgomery County, Wims became the first male Head Start Teacher in Montgomery County in 1974. In 1976, he was hired as Congressman Newton Stears' legislative assistant, and from 1978 until 1980, he served as a legislative assistant for Congressman Melvin Evans. In 1981, Wims was hired by the Secretary of Agriculture and the Director for Minority Affairs and Economic Development, where he remained until 1989. That year, he started a consulting firm, Hammer and Nails. In 1994, he was elected president of the Montgomery County Chapter of the NAACP, and the following year he became president of the Maryland NAACP.
