Summary: | Dancer Muriel Foster was born Muriel Burns on January 16, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois. She started dancing at an early age under the instruction of Sadie Bruce. She attended Carter Elementary School and, while still in school, Foster and four of her friends- Shirley Hall, Jean Cornell, Clarice White, and Gloria Broussard- started performing as the sensational "Dyerettes". Foster graduated from DuSable High School in 1948, and earned her A.A. degree from Wilson Junior College in 1951. The Dyerettes often shared the stage with Sammy Davis, Jr. and performed until the late 1950's. In 1967, Foster became a personnel supervisor for Wieboldts Department Stores and human resources coordinator for Chicago's Merchandise Mart. Despite a full career, Foster actively supported the Sammy Dyer School of Theatre. When Mr. Dyer passed away in 1960, Dyerette Shirley Hall directed the school from 1960 to 1998, and Foster then became the director of the school.
