Summary: | Military officer Roger Stanley Walden, was born on May 21, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended Detroit's Barber Intermediate School, Munger School, Chadsey School and graduated from Eastern High School in 1941. Enlisting in the United States Army in 1942, Walden became a member of the "Sweet Sixteen" in February of 1944, the first African American paratroopers in United States history, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, and the "Triple Nickel". Walden was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry in March of 1945. In 1949, Walden became commander of infantry in Japan and in 1950, Korea. Promoted to Major, Walden served in Europe from 1957 to 1960. Walden earned a B.A. degree in Social Studies from San Francisco State University in 1963. He taught military science at Central State University before retiring in 1966. He was manager of the City of Detroit's Vacant Housing Rehabilitation Program until 1984. Walden passed away on September 17, 2013.
