| Summary: | Federal appointee, civil rights leader, and politician the Honorable Andrew Young was born on March 12, 1932 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Educated at Howard University and the Hartford Theological Seminary, Young began his career in 1955 as pastor of United Church of Christ. In 1957, he went on to the National Council of Churches as associate director for youth work. From 1961 to 1964, Young became an administrator for United Church of Christ's Christian Education Program and was a staff member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference from 1961 to 1970. Young served in the United States House of Representatives representing Georgia from 1972 to 1976. He also served as United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 1977 to 1979 and as mayor of the City of Atlanta from 1982 to 1990. In 1996, he served as chairman of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and co-chairman for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympics.
