Summary:Entrepreneur and architect Herbert Alexander DeCosta, Jr. was born on March 17, 1923, in Charleston, South Carolina to Herbert A. DeCosta, Sr. and Julia Craft DeCosta. He graduated from the Avery Institute in Charleston in 1940, and received his B.A. degree from Iowa State College in architectural engineering in 1944. In 1947, DeCosta joined the family business, H.A. DeCosta Company, which was founded by his grandfather in 1899. He worked there as vice president and president until his retirement in 1989, selling the business in 1990. One of DeCosta Company's notable projects was the restoration of the Herndon Mansion in Atlanta, Georgia. He served as a historic restoration consultant on local projects for Historic Traditions and Grace Custom Homes. DeCosta received various awards including South Carolina's Governor's Award and the Frances R. Edmunds Award for Historic Preservation for his contributions to the Charleston. He passed away on December 28, 2008.
