Summary: | Broadcast and sports executive Curtis Symonds was born on August 12, 1955 in Bermuda and grew up in Wilberforce, Ohio. In 1978, he received his B.S. degree from Central State University, beginning a career in the cable television industry. In 1979, Symonds worked for Continental Cablevision in Ohio as systems manager. In 1983, he worked for ESPN in Chicago as advertising sales consultant and then as director of affiliate marketing for the Midwest region. In 1988, he joined Black Entertainment Television (BET) as executive vice president of affiliate sales and affiliate marketing. In 1992, he became president and chief operating officer of BET Action Pay Per View and BET International. From 1996 until his retirement in 2001, Symonds served as executive vice president of BET on Jazz. In 2005, Symonds was hired as chief operating officer of the Washington Mystics WNBA team. Symonds also opened Hoop Magic in 2006 in Chantilly, Virginia for area youth.
