| Summary: | Cultural heritage advocate Donald George was born on May 31, 1966, in Freetown, Sierra Leone. A descendent of both Mende slaves and one of the leading founders of Sierra Leone, George dedicated his life to humanitarian and educational services. After graduating from Transworld College, he worked for the Council of Churches, helping to develop educational programs for young people. He then joined the United Church of Christ and became involved with Amistad America, Inc. in 2004. Through Amistad, George taught the story of the Amistad Incident of 1839 aboard the Freedom Schooner Amistad. George was instrumental in Amistad America's Atlantic Freedom Tour of 2007, when they sailed to England, West Africa, and the Caribbean, landing in their home port in Connecticut one year later. In 2010, George was recognized for his efforts by being nominated for the National Organization of Sierra Leoneans in North America Diamond Award.
