Summary: | Biologist and professor Edwin Cooper was born in 1936. Cooper received his B.S. degree with honors from Texas Southern University in 1957, his M.S. degree from Atlanta University in 1959, and his Ph.D. degree from Brown University in 1963. He joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine in 1964, as an assistant professor. He was promoted to a full professorship in 1973. Cooper's research on invertebrate immune systems and the evolution of the immune system was widely published, with topics ranging from chronic allograft rejection in earthworms to the studies of fish, amphibian and invertebrate immune systems. From 1989 to 1993, Cooper served as the vice chair for UCLA's department of anatomy and cell biology. Later in his career, Cooper's research focus shifted to the improvement of human health through knowledge of invertebrate immunology.
