Summary: | Magazine editor, activist and writer Michaela Angela Davis was born in 1964, in Germany. Davis was raised in Washington, D.C., where she attended the Duke Ellington School for the Arts. Upon graduating, she attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts before joining the Stella Adler Acting Conservatory in 1983. Davis worked as associate editor for Essence magazine in 1991, and became founding fashion director of Vibe magazine in 1993. In 2002, she was the stylist for the film Paid in Full, and the following year became editor-in-chief of Honey magazine. Davis rejoined Essence in 2004, as executive fashion and beauty editor and culture section director. In 2005, she launched the "Take Back the Music" campaign and began doing public speaking. BET hired Davis as editorial brand manager during the network's rebranding, and in 2012, she founded MAD Free, a community conversation project.
