Summary: | Corporate executive Calvin "Kern" Grimes, Jr. was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1940. The same year, his father founded Grimes Oil Company and began delivering gas to local residents. Upon graduation from Brighton High School, Grimes began driving the company's second truck. In 1969, the company was incorporated as Grimes Oil Company, Inc. and Grimes took over as president. In the 1970s, Grimes led the company's transition to supplying corporations, including Polaroid Corporation and Raytheon Company. In 1979, Grimes Oil Company reported $30 million in sales in its debut on Black Enterprise magazine's list of top black-owned businesses. Grimes led the company through financial troubles in the 1980s, and, in 1993, the company joined Intergy, Inc. which invested in redevelopment of Roxbury, Massachusetts. Grimes was the father of five children, and was active on several boards.
