Summary: | "The studies on which this monograph is mainly based were originally carried out some is years ago by a group of psychological workers in association with representatives of other disciplines and were part of a program which is described in the body of the report. Some of the studies have appeared separately in published papers during the intervening period but a considerable amount still remains unpublished. In 1941 the occasion arose for integrating part of the available data with special reference to the problem of deterioration. When completed it was presented in substantially the present form as a thesis in partial fulfillment for the Ph. D. degree at Harvard University. Although plans for publication were made at that time, war conditions have delayed the step until the present. Despite the several years' delay involved, no attempt has been made to include bibliographic references beyond 1941-2 since the major aim of the essay was to present the implications of our own program of research"--Preface.
