Greek inscriptions as testimonies of cultural history/Greek epigraphy as cultural history. For the first time, this volume provides a German-language overview of Greek epigraphy and its significance in cultural history. Inscriptions are reproduced, edited, re-translated and discussed. Contains 65 expressive epigraphic testimonies from the 8th century BC to the Renaissance. Gives insights into different areas such as religious customs, arts and crafts, ancient schools and education, and economic aspects. On the one hand, the selection takes into account typical text genres (such as Christmas or graffiti), but also offers singular inscriptions such as the wishes of an offerer of olive oil to Zeus or the complaint of an apprentice. With testimonies from Greece to Afghanistan, large parts of the ancient world are taken into account. The inscriptions outlined here touch on a variety of cultural contexts that are also of interest to scholars of the ancient world, cultural scientists, historians, sociologists or any reader interested in the ancient world.
