Summary:The film shows how Rubens drew upon his experiences of Italian art to explore the complex range of emotions the human body can convey, and reveals how he realised these powerfully in paint. The challenge of representing the infinite variety of physical contact - from the gently protective to the murderously violent - fascinated Rubens, and this film examines how the twin themes of pain and love, so central to his early paintings, would come to dominate his later work.
