Summary: | Sloan (Rutgers Univ. Libraries) offers a filmography listing more than 2,400 American and international fictional feature films "with an adult female protagonist (or group of females) around whom the story evolves or from whose point of view the story is told." All films were released after 1960 and are arranged in subsections by country of origin. Each entry includes the title, year of release, principal crew members, alternative titles, and any awards received. The films are not annotated critically; however, Sloan provides brief synopses, some of which are her original work and some of which are credited to external sources. The volume offers several useful indexes, in addition to those by title and subject, including one for actresses and actors, one for best actress awards and nominations, and one for principal members of the film crews. For its price, Reel Women may not be a good investment for public libraries or small colleges without a film major; the information herein could be obtained, albeit piecemeal, through other books and Internet sites. However, since no other up-to-date filmography like this currently exists, the convenience of this resource makes it a good addition for institutions with comprehensive film studies programs, particularly those that emphasize gender studies.
