Summary:Lucio Costa played a leading role within some of the most outstanding products of the modernist generation in Brazil and is often recognised as father of Brazilian modernism, influencing his younger and more internationally celebrated colleague Oscar Niemeyer. Probably on the basis of Costa's own reading of his contribution, the majority of the historical and critical interpretations have offered an oversimplified version of his career, leaving gaps which still need to be filled.
