Summary: | Belmonte, pseudonym of Benedito Bastos Barreto (1896-1947), was an Art Déco cartoonist, caricaturist, illustrator, chronicler, novelist and even researcher of the history of São Paulo. His works were published in the newspapers Folha da Noite and Folha da Manhã, and in magazines Careta, Fon-Fon! and O Cruzeiro. "A century ago the intellectual-artist Belmonte published in the magazines of Rio "Careta" e "Frou Frou" caricatures about feminist demands, machismo, social fragmentation, superficiality of relationships and obsession with appearances, among other themes that remain current. To approach with humor transformations of behavior, fashion and sociability, the Paulista artist offers a portrait of the 1920s in tune with a modernization project then underway, while highlighting identity, gender, class and ethnic issues."--Verso Cover.
