Collation: fol. iv (greed laid paper, i is pastedown) + 97 (polished paper, foliated 1-97 in modern pencil) + iv (green laid paper, iv is pastedown); 1⁴(1 is pastedown) 2²(±2) 3⁶ 4¹⁴(±1,2,12) 5⁶ 6¹² 7⁶ 8¹² 9⁸ 10¹² 11⁸ 12¹⁰(-1, ±2,3) 13² 14⁴(4 is pastedown); horizontal catchwords in inner margin.
Layout: Written in 1 column of 11 lines; border-rules in red, black, and gold; occasional marginal notes in the calligrapher's hand.
Script: Written in naskh.
Decoration: Illuminated superimposed headpiece with gold, blue, and red floral decorations on fol. 1v; opening two leaves with gilt borders and interlinear colouring of pounced gilt decorations, followed by borders in red, black, and gold throughout; verses marked throughout by gilt roundels; polychrome headings that open sections of the text throughout; two full-page coloured illustrations of Mecca and Medina on fol. 14v and 15r.
Binding: Type II (see Gacek, A. Arabic manuscripts) with flap attached to lower cover; red morocco over boards; elaborate gold tooled borders on covers and flaps with green morocco medallion inlays decorated in gilt; rebacked on spine and flap.
Origin: Made in Ottoman Turkey in the first half of 19th century by calligrapher Ḥāfiẓ Aḥmad ʻAzīz ibn Aḥmad (see colophon).
Provenance: bookplate of Pamela and Raymond Lister; paper repaired on fol. 36 and 37 with no loss of text; marginal notes on fol. 64v apparently washed, still faintly visible.
