Notes:	Title vocalized. למן תקופת המקרא ועד לזמננו מתועד בספרות היהודית שלל בשמים. ספר זה מוקדש לדיון בשדה ההלכתי של 'ברכות הריח', שראשיתו בתקופת חז"ל, דהיינו ברכות הנאמרות על ההנאה מריחם של בשמים. מוצג כאן לראשונה מידע מקיף ועדכני הנוגע לתולדות הבשמים, זיהויים, שמותיהם בלשונות היהודים, שימושיהם ומקומם בהווי ובפולקלור היהודי. באופן ממוקד יותר, נידונות השיטות והגישות השונות לגבי הברכות שהוצעו למיני הבשמים המגוונים, החל מחכמי התלמוד וכלה בפוסקי זמננו. מחקר זה הוא רב־תחומי והוא חובק כמה תחומי ידע: בוטניקה, זואולוגיה, היסטוריה, תרבות חומרית וספרות רבנית. הנושא נבחן לאור הספרות היהודית הקדומה והמאוחרת (מקרא, חז"ל, הלכה, שו"ת, מנהג וסידורי תפילה) והמחקר המודרני. עיקרו של הספר מוקדש לסקירה שיטתית של כ־70 מיני בשמים. המקור לרובם המוחלט של חומרי הבושם טרם ההתפתחות התעשייתית־כימית היה עולם הצומח ומיעוטם מעולם החי. בעלי הלכה במזרח ובמערב דנו בצמחים ארומטיים ובהפרשות ריחניות של בעלי חיים שגדלו בר או טופחו בחקלאות באזור מגוריהם, וגם בבשמים אקזוטיים שהגיעו אל ארצותיהם דרך נתיבי המסחר בים וביבשה ממחוזות גידולם בדרום מזרח אסיה ובערב. הממצא מצביע על קהילות שחיו באזורים דלי בשמים, למשל בארצות קרות באירופה.
