Provenance: | From dealer's description: Pearson records Kahane's acknowledgement for receipt of 100 copies from R.A. Caton of the Fortune Press in June 1938, but only locates on copy (in his own collections). The work was amongst those seized during a police raid of the Fortune Press offices, and subsequently declared obscene- the court's assessment focusing in large part on the illustrations of Jean de Bosschère, and delivered the warning that 'A classical author might lapse into obscenity', not least when keeping company with contemporary works considered unsuitable (as the present text was on both the lists it occupied). Binding: original black buckram; silver label with black lettering on spine.
