Summary:The rise of Friedrich Barbarossa from Swabian duke to Roman-German king and emperor was fraught with conflict: the aristocratic society's ideas of rank and honor shaped his reign and often became the source of bloody conflicts. However, the conditions in Italy in particular turned out to be a political challenge for the Staufer. His ability to assert himself and to compromise had to prove itself not least in relation to the self-confident municipalities of northern Italy under the leadership of Milan - but also in the tense relationship with the popes in Rome.
