An unnumbered, undated specimen number was issued probably in 1834 (as evinced from internal evidence). Publication was suspended in 1840, after six numbers had been issued, and was resumed in 1841. Includes separately issued supplement: Waldie's journal of polite literature. This was absorbed into the main publication and became an unpaged section at the beginning of the Select ciculating library. The printed wrappers contain "The Journal of belles lettres, embracing three to four pages of addition new matter, will be given every week as an accompaniment ..." This was also issued separately "on fine white paper ... to non-subscribers to the 'Library,' at two dollars per annum if paid in advance, or three dollars at the end of the year." The Journal of belles lettres was also issued with the reprint and the octavo editions.
