Summary: | This catalog showcases over 20 figurative artists from the African continent and diaspora. While the artists assembled represent a diverse array of styles, they all explore complex questions of identity, aesthetics and art history. Amoako Boafo and Otis Quaicoe reveal richly layered hybrid identities; Souleimane Barry, Bouvy Enkobo and Christopher Myers conjure dreamlike scenes that merge the real and the imaginary, drawing from an endless trove of African myths. Together, the artists’ portraits invite the reader to interrogate how the Black figure has often been misrepresented or overlooked in the Western painting tradition.
