Summary:"In verse. Title, statement of responsibility, and imprint transcribed from upper cover. Probably an unauthorized edition. According to the Oxford companion to children's literature (1984), Randolph Caldecott first published his illustrated version of John Gilpin in 1878. "The Caldecott series ... John Gilpin's ride to Ware ... 4to., 32 pages ... Price, 25c. each."--publisher's advertisement, p. [4] of wrapper. This description matches that given for the Caldecott series in the section of the McLoughlin publisher's catalogue devoted to "New stock for the seasons of 1880 and 1881." (See Catalogue of McLoughlin Bros., toy books (New York, [1880])). Publisher's advertisement in the book in hand also includes entries for the following items in press--Transformation toy books (price 25 cents each), and The yellow dwarf series (price 8 cents each). These two series are not listed in the trade catalogue for 1880-1881, but are included in the Catalogue of McLoughlin Bros., toy books (New York, [1882].) In this publisher's catalogue, the Transformation toy books are also priced at 25 cents each, but the books in The yellow dwarf series are listed at 10 cents apiece. Text printed in sepia ink. Cover and full-page illustrations chromolithographed. Textual illustrations printed in sepia ink. Cover included in pagination."
