Summary:Many everyday words in Norwegian have been with us for hundreds of years and are thus bridges back to a society and a way of life that we have left behind. We have come to terms with many of the attitudes from that time. Maybe we should take some old words to the rubbish heap too? Like "jomfruhinne," "formann" and "kvinnelig direktør." Otherwise, we could become unconscious messengers of attitudes we do not have. Attitudes can change when language changes. If we constantly hear that brave people must be equipped with balls, or that one laughs like a girl, it affects our attitudes about sex and courage and about sex and tears. For that reason too, we should be careful with our words. A handbook in gender-neutral language is the book for those who want to use language that does not oppress. It contains concrete tips and advice on which words you should avoid and which ones you can use instead. There are many traps in language if you are not a conscious language user all the time, and this handbook makes you a detective in everyday language, for both what you read and what you write.
