Summary: | After China, Cuba, Africa, Brazil and Australia, the volume continues the in-depth study and investigation of non-European cultures carried out in recent years by the PAC of Milan, starting from the reading of the works of contemporary artists. The volume offers an in-depth overview of contemporary art in Japan. The reading that is given starts from the analysis of various works from the 2000s, with particular attention to the expressive forms that involve bodies and performances - and how they are connected to society, environment, materiality and technology. The artworks exhibited - different both in style and media - are closely linked to the reflection on identity, a theme of great importance in contemporary Japanese artistic research, and are analyzed in the broader context of the post-war Japanese avant-gardes - such as the Gutai Art Association - in order to explore the contours of the relationship between the legacy of 20th century wars and the contemporary world. A multifaceted but functional picture emerges to describe the artistic ferment of Japan: a contemporary laboratory characterized by an interesting intellectual vivacity.
