Liguori, Italian doctor of the Church; chief moral theologian of the Catholic Church of the 18th century and a representative of a school of causistry; founder of the monastic order of the Redemptorists in 1732; named patron saint of moralists and confessors in 1950. His Theologia moralis originated as annotations to Hermann Busembaum, a celebrated Jesuit moral theologian of the 17th century.
