Presbytery of Birmingham (A); erected in Alabama as Presbytery of Birmingham by Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1897; transferred to rolls of Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. in 1906; name changed to Presbytery of Birmingham (A) in 1910 because of conflict with an existing PCUSA presbytery of the same name; the presbyteries of Birmingham and Birmingham (A) co-existed until 1958 under the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and until 1964 under the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., at which time they merged, retaining the name Birmingham (A); name was shortened to Birmingham in 1970; continued by Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) after 1983 until 1987.
