Benson, who served two terms as president of the Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church, received the M.A. degree from Augustana College, Rock Island, IL, 1914, and the B.D. from Augustana Theological Seminary, Rock Island, 1915. He was pastor of several congregations, president of the National Lutheran Council, and a member of the General Board of the National Council of Churches and the executive committee of the Lutheran World Federation.
